This Friday night, August 21st, marks the start of an awesome 10 week long sealed league of Magic at Brap's. If you're interested, but concerned about being able to get a ride down to Burlington each week, let Steve at Brap's and either Paul or Harold know, and if enough of us are interested (I know I am!) we will be able to play some of our matches more locally to Fairfax. This is a great opportunity to get some more sealed gaming in with each other and to meet other gamers in the local gaming community, and to represent our community while doing so. Here are the official event details from the Facebook event page: You are a Planeswalker. These words have been a part of Magic since it's earliest days, and form the core of it's original concept. As a Planeswalker, you possess great magical abilities, and can stride between the Multiverse's near-infinite planes with ease. At some point in your past, a great trauma or crisis “ignited” your Spark, unlocked your Planeswalker potential and infusing you with the ability to manipulate the Aether; the substance that connects all the Planes to each other.
Along with a number of other Planeswalkers, you have been granted a great opportunity by a mysterious being calling himself the Eternal Arbiter. Engaging in a tournament of power and wills, you have been allowed a chance to gain access to what this “Arbiter” calls “The Lost Treasure of Urza”. To receive it, you must fuel a key with motes of Spark taken from other Planeswalkers defeated by you in honorable combat. The Planeswalker whose key is charged the most at the end of 10 weeks of grueling battles will be given the treasure. You know that the treasure will be more than worth the danger, even if it means you may lose your own Spark and become less powerful. You may even lose so much Spark that you perish. However, in Magic death is not always the end, though you often come back.... changed. _____________________________________________ About the League: The Magic: The Gathering Sealed Deck Escalation League is a new League format for Friday Night Magic to be run over the course of 10 weeks at Brap's Magic. This format is meant to be a more casual-friendly environment compared to most FNM events, and is designed from the ground up to appeal to a wide variety of players who do not make up the normal traditional FNM player base. Players new to the game who are just starting their collections, players who enjoy a limited play environment, casual players who like playing the game but are usually turned off by the more competitive atmosphere at many Magic events, and players who enjoy a more thematic play experience are among the players we hope to draw in. In addition, the league is designed so that players coming in late to the league will still be able to compete (though they will certainly have some catching up to do!), and are not necessarily penalized for not being able to attend an event. Players who join the league will build their decks from a sealed pool of cards. This pool will initially consist of two 30-card introductory packs (one of a color chosen by the player, the other at random) and one sealed booster pack of Magic Origins. From this pool of cards, they must build a deck with a minimum deck size of 40 cards. All players will be allowed to add basic land as needed. Each week thereafter, players will receive an additional booster pack to add to their card pools. With each week after the first, the minimum deck size will increase by 5 cards, until it reaches the standard minimum size of 60 at the start of week 5. Players are not allowed to trade cards from their pools or add cards to their pools from outside those earned by playing in the League. There will be a link to the League rules and format document, which explains how the special rules work, as well as full details on prize support, and how players can catch up if they join the League late. Entry Fee: $5. Includes cards to begin your sealed deck pool. Prizes: There will be prizes each week, including FNM promos and other special prizes. In addition, there will be a prize for the end of the League, The Lost Treasure of Urza, and more. Details on the prize support for the League can be found in the League document when it's posted. See you there! :-)
-Harold So, I finally made it to an official, Wizards of the Coast sanctioned pre-release event this weekend, and I must say, I had a blast! I played in the 10:30 event at Brap's Magic, and went with the Green kit. My first question, as I opened the kit up and saw the top card on my green, weighted pack was: "Does everyone start with a Planeswalker?" Yep, that's right, I pulled a foil Nissa, Vastworld Seer/Sage Animist right out of the gate. The rest of my pull for green really wasn't that great, and in hindsight, I probably should have moved on to Plan B and played White and Blue, but I really wanted to run Nissa, since she is my first Planeswalker EVER. And I somehow managed to get her in hand every single game I played, so in that respect, she didn't let me down. And I was able to get her into play 75% of my games, and in 100% of those, I was able to spark her to her Planeswalker side. All in all, I left on the low end of the ranks, but had a fun time nonetheless!
How'd you guys do? What are your favorite cards and elements in the new set? Did you make it out to any of the pre-release events? Or will you be attending any of the Launch events this weekend? For those of you in Middle School, Brap's Magic is hosting a special, youth event this Saturday at noon (registration opens at 11:30) for ages 6-12. It's a constructed event, so bring your own deck (without proxies) of 60+ cards and have a blast. Full event details and more information can be found HERE. --Harold As Semisonic used to sing, get ready to go out to the places you will be from. Origins is set to be released at the end of the month, and Brap's Magic and Quarterstaff both have some great Pre-Release sealed events going on all weekend, July 11-12, in Burlington to ring in the new set before you can officially even buy it! Find all the details here:
